The Cochran family were Quakers and the first settlers in what is today Park Ridge. The Cochrans built their homestead in 1834 on what they believed to be open land on the edge of the wilderness. John Lewis Cochran and his wife Martha Wilson Cochran were both born in Pennsylvania; they married there in 1811, then moved to Ohio where they raised five children before heading west with two other families from Ohio who had joined them in establishing a new settlement at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (now known as Delavan).

They left Delavan after only two years due to illness among several members of their party including Mrs. Cochran herself who suffered badly with malaria during her time there; she died shortly after arriving back home again following an unsuccessful attempt at recovery through restorative treatment at Mineral Point Springs Hotel near Madison WI (which has since been demolished).
